Martian
Landscape with Rover and Dust-Covered Airbag
(available as wallpaper)
This latest color 'postcard from
Mars,' taken on Sol 5 by the panoramic camera on the Mars Exploration
Rover Spirit, looks to the north. It was created by combining
several smaller photos, which explains the distortion in the horizon
line and the visible seams where images were tiled together. The
brownish-orange object on the far right next to the rover is an
airbag coated with Martian dust. On the left, the circular topographic
feature that has been named Sleepy Hollow by the team at NASA
can be seen, along with dark markings on the ground that might
be surface disturbances caused when the airbag-surrounded lander
touched down and bounced around before coming to a rest.
